Rory Reid Reaches Out to Rural Nevada

Gubernatorial candidate Rory Reid made two stops in rural northern Nevada on Saturday.

Reid doesn't have to compete against other democrats to get on November's ballot; so far, he's the only one running for Governor.

He does have plenty of Republican competition willing to run the state. Typically, rural areas are a bit more conservative.

"A big one for me is education," says Robert Blalock of Fernley.

"We're spending a quarter of the time in a classroom making sure they fill in the right bubble," says Reid, talking about students and preparing them for standardized tests.

In Fernley, a back room at the Wigwam was transformed into a political forum.

This is a chance for Reid, a Clark County Commissioner, to give potential voters a copy of his plan for Nevada, "The Virtual Crossroads."

"We need to have a conversation as a state, we have such daunting problems. I think we need to solve them together," Reid says.

Lindy Rossmann is taking notes on what Reid is saying. Rossmann's Republican husband isn't here. But, she says he's considering switching parties because he wants a change.

Reid says when it comes time for the election, Nevadans won't look for a "R" or a "D" by the candidate's name.

"Doesn't matter if you're Democrat or Republican and you want small business to do better, you want to improve the education system, you want to diversify our economy, you want to create jobs. These aren't partisan issues," adds Reid.

Rossmann comments, "I liked, for one thing that he actually listened to people."

Blalock is finishing up college to become a teacher and has concerns about finding a job. "Am I gonna get one? It doesn't look it. I'll be able to do a lot of sub work."

After listening to what residents of Fernley had to say, Reid says for the most part, Nevadans want the same thing.

"I'm looking as, I'm an American and I'm a Fernley-ite and I'm looking to see what's best for our country and for our state," says Rossmann.

Reid is back in Las Vegas and will campaign more Sunday.
